Family gardens should be the perfect place for everyone to relax and unwind. The key to creating a communal family-friendly garden design is to ensure you consider how space will be used by each member of the family. This way you can apply some creativity to your garden design to ensure that everyone is accounted for.
An often-overlooked factor in family garden design is how much time you will want to spend maintaining it. If you’re a green thumb who enjoys spending weekends nurturing the garden, then your design needs are far different to someone who winces at the sight of a lawnmower. Another important factor in designing a garden perfect for families is to consider the surfaces and materials used in the project so that they’re fit for use. A backyard with a lawn is still probably considered part of the great Australian dream, however, artificial grass production has improved exponentially over the past decade. This can provide a fuss-free option for busy families who want to reduce maintenance costs and time and also reduce the mess and mud that comes with a traditional lawn.
Considering your pets into the design will also be a huge factor when designing your new family garden. There’s nothing worse than coming home to find the dog has pulled out a bunch of your freshly planted flowers or worse has eaten something you’ve planted that is actually toxic to animals. This inner-city garden was designed to meet the needs of a young family who like to entertain but still required solutions for storage and off-street parking. To help make the modern design more kid-friendly we incorporated a custom-designed and built kids playhouse. Key to the design of the playhouse was making sure it was far enough away from the entertaining area so as not to intrude, but also close enough to keep an eye on the kids. Retractable awnings mean that this playhouse has year-round enjoyment rain or shine. A grey and white colour palette provide a sophisticated look whilst highlighting punctuations of playful colour and contemporary styling to link the children’s play areas with the home. Style, space and safety were all key to the brief for this project. This generous family garden keeps things clean and simple to cope with the growing needs of a young family. The design incorporates turning an old garage into a new cabana with the addition of sliding and bi-fold doors. Effective use of space in the pool area has created multiple entertaining spaces and when combined with a generous lawn area and stylish glass pool fencing rounds out the style, space and safety aspect of the brief.
